Montreal Museum of Fine Arts visit

1) Volte- Face:

- Cindy Sherman's artwork is the one I liked best from the exhibition

- I really like the variety of personas presented in her work. It is very interesting to look at the various transformation she does for every character. I had fun viewing her work because all her characters had a different look and personality to them. Some of which are so different from how she usually look like that you almost don't recognize her which I find impressive.

- I think the way the museum exhibit her work was effective in highlighting the different character transformation she does. For example, there was a wall that was dedicated to a series she done. They were all small size print of her different transformation. It had an isolated portrait of Cindy Sherman as a photographer that was contrast with a two column set of image of her different characters . I found that looking at all the images as a big set and separating it to her portrait gives a bigger impact to the viewer.

2) Bailey Collection:

-Thomas Demand is a German photographer born in 1964 who started as a sculptor. He is known for his photograph of life size paper recreation of mundane setting or recognizable place like the White House's oval office. This artist also doesn't include people inside the setting of his photographs. Demand is the one who makes these paper model for his photos. He usually takes down his paper recreation once he's done photographing them.

3) Art du Tout Monde:

-I chose this photograph of Edward Burtynsky because I found it to be a striking  image. When I first saw this image, you wondered what cause all this damage presented in the photograph. The image is huge enough to see a lot of detail like the leftover calendar on the wall.  After reading that it was cause by the Three Gorges dam project , the image was effective in showing the severity of the destruction of the village cause by the building of the dam.

- The artwork was surrounded by Buddhas sculpture, video and architecture fragment of Vishnu. The photograph was taken place in China which Buddhism is the one of the main religion of the Country. Also, Buddha is the founder of Buddhism.

- I found that the three set of photographs of Arwa Abouon to be very moving. I like how it depicted different female relationship in each of these image. The image gives an atmosphere of positivity and care. The one were a woman is braiding a girl's hair relates to a memory of my mom doing something similar to me when I was a kid. I also enjoy the frame design of the image because it's frame the subject nicely.

- The artwork is situate in front of a big carpet. The carpet features a lot of repeating pattern/shapes. The frame design inside these images also includes these repeating elements.

- The video by Mohau Modisakeng is a very captivating video experience. The small room with the three wall depicting the videos gives a very intimate experience. The use of sound was very effective in setting the mood and enhancing the visual experience. The sound of the waves/water really sets the atmosphere and gives you a sense of anxiety when the water is submerging the individual. I also thought it was beautifully shot and though the way the movement/acting of the performer were captivating to witness.

- The video were beside ancient Egyptian artifacts most notably the Egyptian coffin which juxtapose with the visual reference of the individual lying on the boat in the video which looks similar to a person lying in a coffin.
