Research on James Casebere
James Casebere is a visual artist from East Lansing, Michigan. His earlier work has established him as a leading artist working with constructed photography. In the last thirty years, Casebere has created complex models that are photographed in his studio. His constructions are made of simple materials and is based on architectural, art historical and cinematic sources. In the beginning of his career, his artwork was focused on American mythologies such as the genre of the western and suburban home. It was in the early 1990s where James Casebere started being interested in institution buildings. Currently, his subject matter concentrated on different institutional spaces and the relationship between social control, social structure and the mythologies that surround particular institutions.
His pieces also explored the broader implications of dominant systems such as commerce, labor, religion and law.
